Starting Out In Private Practice Checklist (in chronological order)

1) Register on the GMC Specialist Register

  • When you have a substantive post

2) Have MDU or equivalent for your private practice

  • When you have a substantive post

3) Obtain admitting rights to at least one private clinic or hospital

  • Approx. 8 weeks before you intend to start

4) Develop a marketing strategy to ensure that your name appears as a primary choice for the potential patients

  • Approx. 8 weeks before you intend to start

5) Ensure that you have provider recognition obtained with Insurance companies (Bupa & Axa first)

  • 1 month before you intend to start

6) Check the CCSD & HRG medical billing coding systems

  • When you register with Bupa; before you see you 1st patient

7) Tell Bupa about all the codes, including diagnostic tests, that you are likely to perform when you register with them

  • 1 month before you intend to start

8) Decide on your fees

  • 1 month before you intend to start

9) Choose a Private Practice Secretary

  • 1 month before you intend to start

10) Set up a website

  • 1 month before you intend to start

11) Register with the Information Commissioners Office

  • 1 month before you intend to start

12) Check the Data Protection Act

  • 1 month before you intend to start

13) Choose an Accountant

  • 1 month before you intend to start

14) Decide how you want to be set up to trade (Sole Trader, Limited Company, LLP etc.)

  • Within 3 months before you intend to start
